laird family estate

Ken Laird purchased his first Napa Valley parcel in 1970. This neglected piece of land, adjacent to Tubbs Lane in Calistoga, held 70 acres of worn-down prune trees. With Prohibition forty years gone and Napa Valley positioned to re-emerge as viticulturally significant, Ken decided to develop the orchard into a grape vineyard. With a phone call, Robert Mondavi himself agreed to walk the property. After the two men discussed soils, vines, yields, irrigation, and proper pruning. The deal was struck with a resulting vineyard of 50% Gamay and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, Mr. Mondavi guaranteeing Ken’s Cabernet “to be the highest harvest price paid in the Valley.”. The Laird Family has become one of Napa Valley’s most important families since Ken Laird purchased his first vineyard parcel in 1970. The Laird’s are the single largest vineyard holders in the valley and are an important grower for many of California’s top producers, including: Mondavi, Inglenook, Beringer, Cakebread, Merryvale, Joseph Phelps, and Far Niente just to name a few. In 1998 the Laird Family broke ground on the Laird Family Estate Winery and production facility(which currently houses over 60 Custom Crush clients). With the of consulting winemaker Paul Hobbs, the Laird’s are crafting some spectacular examples of Napa Valley wines.
